Organizing 101

Organizing 101: Let’s Make it Simple!

Have you ever looked at your closet and thought, “Whoa! Where did all these shoes come from?” or “I didn’t realize I have 5 pairs of nude sandals!” What about looking in your pantry and wondering where the flour went? Or, “Why do we have 7 cans of baked beans?” Yep! Been there, done that! Organizing can be a daunting task, and often it is hard to know where to start. Let’s break it down into steps to make it easier to follow. In this blog, I will provide simple steps to follow for better organizing the chaos. This outline will be my foundation for all other blog posts, when I deep dive into each room.

Why Organize?

First off, why not organize? Okay, okay! That is the OCD mom coming out! I get it. However, did you know that being organized can:

  • Save you time! – Yes! That means more time with your kids, your family, exercise, Netflix! Whatever you love, you will have more time to enjoy it!
  • Save you money! – If you know what you have, then you know what you need (and don’t need!) Yep, that means you won’t have 7 cans of baked beans sitting in your pantry.
  • Reduce stress! – This goes hand in hand with the two above. If you have more time and more money, then BAM! Less stress! Cue meditation music and lavender scents!

I could go on and on, but do I need to? I mean, who doesn’t want more time to do what they love, more money, and less stress?! Sign me up, please!

Let’s get to the nitty-gritty!

  1. First things first, take a picture! You will enjoy seeing the progress you are making. There are so many times I forget to take the before, and I wanted to kick myself. Don’t be me, take the pic!
  2. Next, remove everything from the area you plan to organize. Yep, I’m telling you to make a mess. If you are anything like me, this will make your anxiety rise. However, this allows you to see EVERYTHING you have.
  3. I’m sorry the room looks worse now than when you started, but trust the process! I promise it will be worth the momentary mess! Okay, let’s start sorting; likes go with likes. During this step, you need to make piles: fall, summer, donate, keep, trash, etc. This is the perfect time to declutter; utilize this time and do so! I promise, you are not going to miss the skirt you wore at formal back in 2010!
  4. Decide where everything’s new home is most practical. For example, if you aren’t a girl who bakes everything from scratch, put the flour and sugar on the top shelf. Or, if your husband isn’t wearing a suit and tie every day, put his formal clothes in the back of the closet. The key is placing items you use often at eye level and where they are easy to reach. Don’t overcomplicate this step! You are trying to make life easier, not be perfect.
  5. Now you are going to start putting everything back in its newly established home! This is the step you will need labels, bins, baskets, airtight containers, etc. In my affiliate link page, I will post my favorite organization items!
  6. Finally, take the after pic! Yes, ma’am, you just did that! Congratulations! I am so proud of all your hard work! Go buy yourself some ice cream! I mean, why not? You have more time and money now! 🙂
